Caciques by E.G. Condé

$5.99$19.99

An Indigenous futurist science fiction novella set in Puerto Rico by author E.G. Condé. Followup to the International Latino Award winning novella Sordidez, coming in 2027.

“Condé’s brutal, mystical, and deeply felt speculative debut lifts up a vision of Indigenous resistance and renewal in the face of climate change and colonizers. … The author’s depiction of Taíno culture is profound, his evocative images of a land in ruin are visceral, and the grief and sheer determination expressed through his characters is often so vivid as to be overwhelming. The result is a beautiful blend of futurism and magical realism that delivers a hopeful message of human resilience.”

About the Book

In the near-future, Borikén (Puerto Rico) flourishes under the stewardship of Caciques—young Taíno leaders who have built a community beyond the colonizing reach of the United Nations Parliament. But peace proves difficult for people who have devoted so much of themselves to surviving war. As Agüeybaná, Yuíza, Anacaona, and their community struggle to build lives beyond resistance, old conflicts resurface in unexpected forms. Betrayal from within and an invading force threaten everything they have built, forcing the Caciques to reckon with the unfinished consequences of their past and decide what it means to protect a community meant for more than survival.
