In September, Stelliform will publish its first book, Depart, Depart! by Sim Kern, a cli-fi ghost story which considers Jewish and trans experiences intertwined with the changes wrought by climate destabilization. Climate change as a whole is slow, but some of its effects can change the world on a scale of minutes or hours. Not unlike the experience of a global pandemic.<\/em><\/p>

COVID-19 and Depart, Depart!<\/em><\/h2>

\nDuring a crisis, human beings aren\u2019t great at long-term thinking.\nIn a fight-or-flight response, our brains block out everything but\nthe most immediate source of danger\u2014literally\ngiving us \u201ctunnel vision.\u201d<\/a> Like many writers, I\u2019ve\nstruggled to put words on the page the last few weeks, as I\u2019ve\nwrestled with pandemic tunnel-vision. I write about climate change,\nand even though I understand the links between COVID-19\nand environmental destruction<\/a>, even though I\u2019m aware that the\nsuffering and death caused by COVID-19 is a fraction of what\nunchecked climate change will bring, I\u2019ve still <\/em>felt like,\n\u201cmaybe now\u2019s not the time to harp on climate change.\u201d \n<\/p>

\nBut as it\u2019s become clear that the virus is here to stay, the danger\nof this tunnel vision becomes increasingly apparent. Some politicians\nare seeking to worsen social and environmental injustice, on the\ngrounds that we can only <\/em>afford to think about the virus right\nnow. For example, under the pretense of addressing the pandemic,\nconservatives\nhave attempted to restrict abortion access in 32 states<\/a>, and the\nTrump administration is seeking to allow\ndoctors to discriminate against trans patients<\/a>. Meanwhile, The\nUnited States\u2019 Environmental Protection Agency has\ndrastically relaxed environmental regulations for polluters,<\/a> even\nthough studies have shown that air pollution is linked\nto a higher death rate for COVID-19.<\/a> And in most places, exposure\nto air pollution correlates\nwith racial and economic inequality. <\/a> \n<\/p>

\nSo as people committed to social and environmental justice, we can\u2019t\nafford virus tunnel-vision. We must continue talking about these\ncritical issues, especially <\/em>in the midst of a pandemic. We\nneed to be louder than ever on the importance of racial, economic,\nand LGBTQ inequality. And, terrifying as it is, we need to keep\nimagining the climate-changed future, until there is overwhelming\npressure to act. And so I\u2019ve never been more proud to be\nrepresented by Stelliform Press, which prioritizes narratives at the\nintersection of climate change and social justice.<\/p>

\nIn my forthcoming novella with Stelliform, Depart, Depart!, <\/em>a\nmassive hurricane devastates the city of Houston. Noah Mishner must\nshelter in the Dallas Mavericks\u2019 basketball arena, where he fears\nthat being trans and Jewish puts him at risk with some \u201ccapital-T\u201d\nTexans. To make things worse, he\u2019s being haunted by the child-ghost\nof his great-grandfather Abe, who escaped from Nazi Germany in a\nduffel bag.<\/p>

\n Rereading Depart, Depart!<\/em> for the first time since the\npandemic has been a surreal experience. I did not foresee a deadly\nvirus in Noah\u2019s future, and if I had, it might\u2019ve robbed him of\nthose few moments of normalcy and connection he\u2019s able to find in\nthe arena. Building relationships with other climate refugees might\nbe far more difficult in the wake of a natural disaster if social\ndistancing is simultaneously being enforced.<\/p>

\nStill, despite the lack of a pandemic, Noah\u2019s story feels more\nrelevant than ever. Houston is currently bracing for a\nworse-than-average\nhurricane<\/a> season. As the Gulf of Mexico warms, I worry the storm\nI dreamt up is all too likely. Inside the Dallas Maverick\u2019s arena,\nclass, racial, and LGBTQ inequalities are worsened by a natural\ndisaster, just as they have been by COVID-19. And in the story as in\nour nation, gun-toting\nconservatives terrorize people who are just trying to survive in the\nname of \u201cfreedom.\u201d<\/a> \n<\/p>

\nAbove all, Depart, Depart!<\/em> is about those moments when the\nworld changes in an instant. When you\u2019re forced to leave your old\nlife behind, what do you take with you? How do you hang on to your\nidentity and community? And will you hold fast to your humanity, even\nwhen survival is on the line? These are questions we\u2019re all\ngrappling with during this pandemic. We\u2019ll continue to grapple with\nthem as the climate crisis intensifies. Literature that fortifies us,\nand helps us prepare for that crisis, is more vital than ever\u2014and I\nhope Depart, Depart! <\/em>can be counted among those titles. \n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
