I mean,\nno-one <em>enjoyed<\/em> navigating absence&nbsp;\u2014 the common\nexperience of loss that came with funerals and memorial services and\ndisappointments&nbsp;\u2014 yet I was as competent with these small\nsorrows as anyone else. But Grief, the undermining upwelling of loss\nin response to ecosystem devastation, the failure of conservation,\nwas far harder to comprehend. I acknowledged it as little as\npossible. Still, it took real effort to look away from anything that\nhad so much power, and so much spread. Like a contagion, it ran\nthrough entire families, through populations and with random\noutbreaks, until everyone knew someone who had it, who had succumbed.<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s\nthe experience of loss,\u201d the psychologists said, but more than that\nit was a loss underlined by guilt, because that loss had no natural\ncause; not if you didn\u2019t count humans as natural, and I didn\u2019t.\nWe weren\u2019t thunderstorms, nor did we blunder about, blind as\nbacteria. We had the capacity for choice, and what we had chosen&nbsp;\u2014\nwhat we continued to choose&nbsp;\u2014 was death. \n<\/p><p>The\nshift in climate that we\u2019d ignored for so long, that we\u2019d only\ngiven lip service to preventing&nbsp;\u2026 when it came it took so many\nof us with it, took us with floods and droughts. That was a small\nthing, really, and we were practised at looking away, so long as it\nonly happened to other people, in other places. But when it started\ntaking what lived with us&nbsp;\u2014 the birds and beasts and creatures\nthat we loved, the green world that grew up around us, well. That was\na loss we hadn\u2019t prepared for, for all we had allowed it&nbsp;\u2026\nencouraged it, even, through our choices. \n<\/p><p>It\nhad never occurred to me&nbsp;\u2014 to any of us&nbsp;\u2014 how intensely\nwe could mourn another species once that species was gone.<\/p><p>It\nwasn\u2019t the same for everyone. Some people didn\u2019t get it at all.\nSome people got it more than others&nbsp;\u2014 there was a higher rate\nof Grief in Indigenous populations, another negative metric people\ndidn\u2019t want to acknowledge lest it highlight their own culpability\nand continued privilege. Some people were set off by old extinctions,\nsome by new. Some felt it well up inside them with each new charred\nkoala, burnt to death by bushfires. For some it was the sight of\nstarved rockhopper penguins, for some the quiet, empty spaces where\nthe little rock wrens had been, or the fading of alpine buttercups.\nThe skeletal bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef had triggered the\nGrief of entire communities, and looking back now, I realized that\nthere Marjorie had shown her susceptibility.<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s\nall right for you,\u201d she said. \u201cNo matter what happens, you\u2019ll\nalways have your jellyfish.\u201d<\/p><p>I\nwish I\u2019d seen less bitterness. I wish I\u2019d found another way to\nshare the jellyfish with her. A better way. But with the Reef gone,\nthere was no substitute for her, nothing she could ever learn to love\nso well. \n<\/p><p>The\nthing about Grief: once it comes it never leaves. The Grief is\nspiralling down and down into loss that can never be recovered, that\nwill never lack culpability. It\u2019s the guilt that makes it so\ndevastating&nbsp;\u2026 and so profoundly destructive.<\/p><p>The Grief always ends in suicide. <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stelliform.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/TIROGJellyfishDivider.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2243\" width=\"19\" height=\"18\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stelliform.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/TIROGJellyfishDivider.png 76w, https:\/\/www.stelliform.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/TIROGJellyfishDivider-45x45.png 45w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 19px) 100vw, 19px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p>The\nday that Marjorie became the Sea Witch she fired her boat to ashes.\nThe <em>Sea Witch<\/em> was too large, and too unwieldy, for her to haul\nit up into sands on her own, so she beached it at the highest point\nshe could and waited for low tide. The sands around the keel were\nwet, and my footprints filled with water as soon as the weight was\nlifted, so I hoped for spluttering and a slow harmless guttering of\nflame, as all my efforts to talk her out of burning failed.<\/p><p>\u201cI\ndon\u2019t want her anymore,\u201d she said.<\/p><p>\u201cThen\nsell her! Or give her away if you have to. Don\u2019t destroy just for\nthe sake of it.\u201d Marjorie loved the <em>Sea Witch<\/em>, no matter how\nmuch she tried to persuade me that she no longer cared. It had been\nfreedom for her, and accommodation, and salt movement. I\u2019d spent\nmore than my share of time aboard, watching the affection on her face\nas she smoothed down surfaces, painted varnish over old wood, talked\nto every sail and joint. \n<\/p><p>\u201cWhy\nnot destroy for the sake of it?\u201d she said. \u201cIsn\u2019t that what\nwe\u2019ve always done?\u201d That utterance\nwas an exaggeration and a culmination both, because Marjorie had\nspent her life in conservation, and it had failed her as much as she\nhad failed it. She\u2019d tried, again and again, to bring back and\nbuild up, and the repudiation of that wasn\u2019t just false, it was\nwallowing.<\/p><p>\u201cIf\nyou can\u2019t bear to watch, you can go home,\u201d she said, but I\ncouldn\u2019t. That would be abandonment and we\u2019d been friends so\nlong. I wouldn\u2019t forgive myself. Already I could see the Grief\nrising in her, though I didn\u2019t want to. Once manifested it never\nleft, only got worse and worse until the Grief was all that was left.\nThe Grief, and the ways of ending it. \n<\/p><p>Part\nof me was afraid she\u2019d throw herself into the fire, burn herself\ndown alongside the <em>Sea Witch<\/em>. That was what made me stay; that\nwas what made me hope for the futility of burning&nbsp;\u2026 that\nperhaps she\u2019d see the futility as well as the flames and snap\nherself out of it.<\/p><p>I\nshould have expected accelerant. There was no hysterics, no\ndetermined rush to annihilation, just a quiet slopping of fuel that\nsounded like seashore, a match, and the end of the vessel. It burnt\nquickly enough and Marjorie stood back and watched with folded arms,\nnever made so much as a move towards the conflagration once she\u2019d\nsparked it.<\/p><p>\u201cIs\nit enough?\u201d I asked her, when the <em>Sea Witch<\/em> had burnt down\nto wet sand and ashes, mostly, with parts of her left over for\nwreckage. The wheel had kept its shape; I could see its print in the\nsand, half-buried.
